Ice Skating

I felt this deserved its own post.

This is actually from the promptlist I mentioned here, and is the last week of January. I wasnt completely sure how to draw someone ice skating in a new and exciting way, as I have done this before as a commission, but I decided to try this new thing with message boxes. It got popular on instagram as well, as people seem to like this way of storytelling. Originally, I was inspired to do this from the norwegian TV show Skam. It is very famous, atleast here in norway, but also got remade for Italy, France, Spain, Usa... probably more countries that I dont know about. Anyway, it was one of the shows that introduced that way of seeing the messages the characters would recieve. However, in this piece, we see the messages that got sent before they even met up. You might also notice that the guy never replied to her, but I'm sure it was just an accident. I mean, he came, didnt he?

I'm unsure if I've mentioned this, but one of my closest friends used to be a professional figure skater, so to really bother her, I made the legs not match up with how you would usually ice skate. I figured it was something funny I could add to this piece, that would only really urk a few people, while others wouldnt notice it.

I also took this piece as an oppurtunity to further experience with the blocky lights. I also incorporated that into the ice, which I really really like the feel of. The ice looks great in this way, and I've gotten a few people saying they love how the ice turned out with this new method.

I dont have any progress gifs from this piece, as I only record those made for Philbert.

I did luckily send a few (very poorly quality) pictures to a friend as I was working on the piece, so I'll put those here.

Sorry for the bad quality, but its better than nothing. I did have the general idea in the very first sketch, and worked through that to do the linework and colour first. Then, it took me some time to consider which kind of background I would like, but I decided to place this in the middle of the city, as I think that's a little funny. Like, we consider ice skating to be this sport thats kind of exlusive, we can only do it a few times a year. But then, when we do, we go to an boring ice rink, in the middle of the city, in the middle of the day, and its all rather anti-climatic. For some reason, that's what I went with in this piece.

I cant say I have any other inspirations than what I've mentioned recently, with Lee Kyu Young as the biggest for this piece. I even chose the colour of the sky and sun based on his illustrations. Linking the same picture as I did last time.
