Project Proposal

The Philbert Project

My project for this course is focusing on the character Philbert and the universe surrounding him. In this project, I want to create the story and universe by not writing down plotpoints or storyboards beforehand, but by simply creating scenes and putting them together. My idea at the time is selecting images and showing them through Viewmasters. My only concern on this if I'm available to travel to London and set that up as a show myself.

I imagine The Philbert Project to be a potential graphic novel or TV-series, and like to work thinking about it in that manner. I aim to create 14 + 14 scenes for Philbert, since the Viewmaster has 14 frames. This would allow me to create 2 different Viewmasters, but I do want to display several of these, perhaps shuffling the images across the two.

The problem with my plan of having no storyboard or written plotline can be coming up with new places and adventures for Philbert to go to, but this also expands the universe in ways that let me be creative with every image I make. I want to create different characters for The Philbert Project and fill up the world with interesting creatures.

Another challenge with this project is that when you have an idea for the plot, it is hard to not get attached to it. If I draw it, it is in a way final, and if I don't, it is unsaid. For it to exist, it needs to be created, and it needs to make sense to an unknowing viewer. This is probably the most challenging part of this quest.

Objective 1:

Create characters for the Philbert Project, including parental figures, friends and foes.

Objective 2:

Create 14 illustrations that would match up to later develop the Viewmaster.

Objective 3:

Create or buy a Viewmaster to get a better idea on how it all will look together.

Objective 4:

Create 14 new illustrations that would match up to create a new Viewmaster.

Objective 5:

Consider if you need more Viewmaster, how to finally show these together, and if you need to change any illustrations, this would be the time to do so.

Objective 6:

Finalize the idea by putting up the final show.

Context

This project has mostly been inspired by TV-series, a concept I am very fond of. I want the emotion for the person watching my final show to be similar to when you end a long running TV-series. This is a hard task to accomplish, and I am not sure if I can manage to do so properly using only images, but it is an idea I am very intrigued to try. There is many challenges in this attempt, especially creating good enough characters, stories and adventures for the viewers to be intrigued in. I want the viewer to want to flip to the next image and hope there's more.

Some TV-inspiration for Philbert is following:

Over the Garden Wall, Steven Universe, She-ra: The Princess of Power, Star-Trek.

Methodology

I will aim to create 3 pieces per week, and follow the requirements I have given myself for these. I experiment with style regurarily, and with my project it is simple to try out new things. If there is something new I discover, for example a new character design for Philbert, I can incorporate these to older pieces quite easily, or change the style of older pieces a bit more complicated. I will keep posting on my blog every new piece I create, and sometimes do the sketches-blog posts. As well as these, I will post on the Retrieval-page when there is anything related to the retrieval period.

Work Plan

December:

By 10th of December, I will have finished at least 2 more illustrations for Philbert, as well as rewritten at least 1/3th of my research paper. I will also create my Work Plan for my retrieval process on my retrieval page in this time.

By 20th of December, I will have finished at least 2 more illustrations for Philbert, as well as rewritten at least 2/3ths of my research paper.

By 30th of December I will have finished at least 2 more illustrations for Philbert, as well as rewritten all of my research paper.

January:

By the 6th of January I will be done with my retrieval process and will focus on developing The Philbert Project further.

By 10th of January I will have an updated work plan, to go through changes I might have discovered in my work.

By 20th of January I will have at least 2 more illustrations on my blog.

By 30th of January I will have created a viewmaster with my Philbert images and consider that idea in depth.

Febuary:

By the 10th of Febuary I will have decided on what to do with the viewmaster. I will have to update this then.

I will hopefully travel to london in this time for the show. I am a bit uncertain because I reckon the final show is more important, and I don't know if I can afford both.

By the 29th of Febuary I aim to have 4 new Philbert illustrations.

March:

By the 10th of March I will have 2 more Philbert illustrations.

By the 20th of March I will hopefully have a second viewmaster.

By the 30th of March I aim to have time to celebrate my birthday. Also I will consider the new viewmaster and see if it needs any changes. I also want to decide what to do considering the final show, if I want to show them just two, or have many with shuffled images. I also have to consider the cost on this.

April:
By 15th of April I will have begun my work on my presentation, as well as the critical evaluation and reflective journal.

By 30th of April I will have finalized my presentation and kept working on my practical work.

May:

By the 10th of May I will have gone over my presentation and made sure its solid. I will also continue working on my critical evaluation and reflective journal.

By the 26th of May I will have continued working on my practical work and practiced my presentation.

Symposium 26 may
